The hot Las Vegas summer can its toll on any air conditioner. By properly caring for your AC unit, you will not only ensure that it continues to operate effectively and efficiently, but it will also ensure that it continues to work for years to come.
To help you extend the life of your air conditioner, simply follow these basic steps:
Schedule Routine Maintenance Every Year
One of the most effective ways to extend the life of your AC is to invest in annual AC maintenance. During maintenance, your unit is inspected, cleaned, and prepared to help it function better.
During an AC tune-up, an experienced technician will perform a thorough inspection of all components of the system checking for potential or developing problems and addressing any concerns as they come up. AC maintenance also provides an opportunity to have your air conditioner cleaned and air filters changed to make sure that it can work as efficiently as possible.
Avoid Overworking It
On the hottest days, the air conditioner will inevitably be forced to cycle on more frequently in order to compete with the temperatures outside. You can help to prevent the unit from overworking by taking a few simple steps such as:
- Setting the thermostat temperature high enough to keep the home comfortable, but not low enough to keep it cool.gov recommends setting your thermostat at 78 degrees during the summer. If that’s simply too warm for your taste, you might consider raising the thermostat by just a few degrees to help give your unit a break.
- Limiting activities that might increase the temperature inside. For example, you might cook on the grill outside rather than turning on your oven. Or run major appliances such as the clothes dryer or dishwasher at night when temperatures outside are cooler.
- Using fans to help circulate air. Make the most of the cool air from your air conditioner by taking advantage of ceiling or portable fans throughout the house.
- Letingt your AC rest. Whenever possible give your air conditioner a chance to rest. You can do this by turning it off at night if it has cooled off enough or simply raising the temperature a couple degrees. You can also do this my changing the thermostat settings if you know you will be gone for the majority of the day.
Help Improve Air Flow
In order for your air conditioner to be truly effective in cooling your home, you must make sure that air is able to flow freely throughout. When airflow is affected, air conditioners are forced to work harder and longer. You can help improve airflow in your home by changing air filters on a regular basis, making sure that vents are not obstructed, or by investing in air duct cleaning.
Update Your Thermostat
If you don’t have one already, you might consider updating your thermostat to programmable smart one. Smart thermostats make it possible for you to control the temperature of your home regardless of where you are from an app on your phone. This allows you to raise or lower the temperature at opportune times helping to minimize the stress on your air conditioner and lower energy bills at the same time.
